About the Global 500
In 1987, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) launched the Global 500 Roll of Honor for Environmental Achievement to award 100 people and organizations a year for five years.
How Laurel Springs School Became One of the Global 500 Laureates In 1990, Laurel Springs School students received the award for their spirited contribution to the environment by their inspirational video "We Can Make a Difference." Over 1 million children have seen this video. Since then the students of Laurel Springs have made two more videos—"Making a Difference Around the World" and "One Small Wish for This Earth"—and written two environmental workshops. From 1990 to 1996, Laurel Springs students (ages 12–18) performed their "Earth Hearing" workshops in schools around the United States (www.global500.org). Laurel Springs School sponsors the Global 500 Environmental Forum, of which Marilyn Mosley Gordanier is president. The Forum promotes interaction and awareness among grassroots organizations, maintains a database for Global 500 laureates and supports the activities of UNEP. |
